American burger joints have been relying on Brazilian beef to serve their customers, but the 50% tariff imposed by the Trump administration on Brazilian products has forced them to seek alternatives from different countries.

American importers are reaching out to countries with significant meat production, such as Australia, according to Wesley Batista Filho, the executive president of the American JBS unit, which handles approximately 25% of American beef.

Australia and other beef exporting nations, according to him, lack sufficient meat to fully substitute for Brazil.

Brazilian meat exported to the United States

In 2025, Brazil accounted for 27% of beef imports to the US, the highest percentage from any country. Importation of Brazilian ground meat increased twofold from January to May compared to the previous year.

In 2024, Brazil was the third biggest exporter to the United States, accounting for 15% of the total, following Australia and Canada.

Total US imports increased by 34% this year due to a severe drought in multiple states, resulting in a significant decline in domestic meat production and increased reliance on imported meat.

Brazil was the most capable supplier among the countries and quickly became the largest exporter due to its ability to meet the increased demand before the 50% rate was imposed.

The offer remains limited in the US, with retail ground meat prices increasing by nearly 12% in July compared to the previous year.

Fridges commonly blend fatty trimmings of animal carcasses with leaner cuts to make the perfect blend for burgers.

Restaurants faced a specific challenge in sourcing lean ground meat due to rising prices and a lack of domestic supply.

New sources will need to be found before more lean beef can be used for burgers, which will have to be sourced from the back of cattle.

The cut is commonly utilized in steaks, and turning it into ground meat could reduce supply and cause prices to rise. Batista Filho mentioned that there will need to be a source for this lean meat, indicating that changes will be necessary.
